Recent news of a class action lawsuit against W.L. Gore & Associates, the makers of the popular Gore-Tex, has sent shockwaves through the outdoor great and apparel industry. What is PFAS?

PFAS, or Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, is a forever-chemical that is known to be harmful to the liver and immune system and can be linked to low birth weight, birth defects, and delayed development. Manufacturers historically applied PFAS during the manufacturing phase of various household goods, apparel, and other consumer goods for it’s chemical properties that offer resistance to water, oil, and heat. But recently, following extensive research it has been found that PFAS can leak from those goods into the water supply, ground and even into the human body. Because of this, the use of PFAS has become heavily scrutinized and many companies have gone to great lengths to eliminate the use of the forever-chemical from supply chains.
