How Muir is Supercharging Primary Data in PCFs

At Muir, we've flipped the script on supplier surveying, making it easier for our customers and their suppliers to request and respond to primary data requests for PCFs.

The Growing Need: Companies Demand Data for PCFs

Businesses today increasingly recognize that Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) are essential for understanding and managing their environmental impact. PCFs rely on precise data about the materials, processes, and energy used to produce specific products—data that only suppliers can provide. Companies can begin the process by creating PCFs using estimates, but as they seek to improve or reduce the emissions associated with their purchased products, they need data from their suppliers to ensure accuracy. However, accessing the specific information required to create reliable PCFs remains a significant challenge.

The Challenge: Accessing Reliable Primary Data

Primary data—information directly sourced from suppliers about the materials, processes, and energy used in product manufacturing—is critical for creating PCFs that truly reflect a product’s environmental impact. However, obtaining the primary data needed to calculate PCFs accurately can be complex and resource-intensive, for both the companies requesting the data as well as the suppliers who are asked to provide it.

Companies often have to invest significant resources to gather data from their suppliers, between establishing and sending out surveys, to following up on outstanding requests, to reviewing and evaluating supplier responses. Currently, companies might receive back uneven information from their different suppliers, based on how questions are interpreted and how thorough a supplier was in its response. This leads to information asymmetry across different suppliers or business groups, and can be a limiting factor in the effectiveness of a company’s supplier sustainability goals.

And on the other end, suppliers are often overwhelmed with a deluge of survey requests from their different customers, each of whom require tailored responses which are often long and complex. Suppliers are asked to provide information on their policies and goals regarding sustainability and ESG initiatives, or on their factories operations, or to provide sensitive information regarding their products’ material composition or on their own suppliers.

And so, when faced with yet another survey request, many suppliers may face significant survey fatigue. This can often result in delayed or incomplete surveys, or even no response at all, essentially leaving their customers back where they started, without access to the primary data they need to make more informed decisions.

Muir’s Innovative Solution: Making PCFs Accessible and Actionable

At Muir, we’ve developed a streamlined approach that simplifies the creation of PCFs for both customers and suppliers.

With Supplier Surveying through the Muir Platform, companies can strategically prioritize their data collection efforts by focusing only on PCFs for their highest-emitting products or key suppliers. This targeted approach reduces the overall burden on suppliers, ensuring that suppliers are able to efficiently review and complete PCF requests at scale.

Our solution eliminates the traditional pain points associated with data collection and fosters collaboration, ensuring that companies and their suppliers are able to easily create PCFs.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Start with What You Have: Using available data from customers—such as product descriptions and supplier locations—Muir generates an estimated PCF in line with ISO standards. Companies can then send the initial footprints to their supplier to review and validate. This transparency builds trust and provides a solid starting point for further refinement.

  2. Simplified Supplier Experience: Suppliers receive completed PCFs, eliminating the need to start from scratch with blank surveys. The PCFs are divided into manageable sections, allowing suppliers to focus on the parts they know best. Sections include: assumptions into the product’s Tier 1 Bill of Materials and upstream sourcing locations, the energy and manufacturing processes required to produce the product, and the transportation modalities needed to deliver to the customer’s location.

If suppliers encounter areas they cannot address, they can simply mark those sections as unknown, avoiding delays or survey abandonment. This design ensures progress even when information gaps exist.

  3. Confidentiality by Design: As Suppliers review and complete PCF requests, they can mark specific data or sections as confidential. This feature allows a Supplier to provide data that will be used in Muir’s models to develop the PCF, but it is not shared back with their customer. Suppliers can participate fully in the data-sharing process without risking competitive disadvantages, ultimately encouraging greater transparency by alleviating fears about disclosing proprietary or sensitive information.

Muir’s platform supports iterative updates, allowing companies and suppliers to refine their PCFs over time. This ensures that the data remains accurate and actionable, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement, benefiting both customers and suppliers in their sustainability efforts.

By addressing the key challenges associated with primary data collection, Muir’s solution makes PCF creation more accessible, accurate, and efficient. Our platform not only helps businesses meet their sustainability goals, but also strengthens relationships between customers and suppliers by fostering collaboration and trust.
